friday favorites

This is going to be a super quick post because there is too much to do for the wedding! Which, depending how bad Hurricane Irene gets, may or may not actually happen.
I bought this super cute Steve Madden black metallic woven oxfords this week, and can't wait to share them with you. They fit my foot perfectly, and are surprisingly comfortable.

I'll add pictures after the wedding

good will towards Goodwill

Since I am a broke college student- even though I work TWO jobs- I am always looking for inexpensive ways to update my wardrobe. I have had really good luck lately at Goodwill. Yes, there is a slight ick factor (maybe due to the slightly stale smell?) but if you are willing to invest the time, you can find some great items. And unlike the more 'acceptable' thrift stores, Goodwill is super cheap!

I got a pair of Gap ultra-low rise bootcut jeans for $4, and literally wear them all the time! Plus, Gap stopped making the ultra low rise, so finding them is hard.
I also scooped up two pairs of 7 for all Mankind jeans for only $8 each, saving myself over $200.
It is also a great place for accessories- my chain strap crossbody bag cost me $1.50- the same bag stores were carrying for $40-90 last summer!!

So the next time it is raining outside and you are sick of the mall, go spend an hour in Goodwill and see how much $20 can buy you

dazzle me

Like I mentioned here, I fell in LOVE with Christian Louboutin's Daffodile Aurora Boreale ($5,995 here) but there was no way I could afford them. I was able to find pairs under $500 on eBay and other discount sites, but that was still to pricey for this college student's budget.

So I decided to make my own. And now, a few weeks later, they are almost done and I am so excited about sharing them! Check back soon

friday favorites

I love the look of chiffon and how easy it is to dress up or down, but it can be kind of hard to clean and keep looking sharp. That is why I am so excited about this friday's purchase. dELiA*S has a chiffon layered tank that combines the beauty of chiffon with the ease of cotton. It manages to look delicate and ballet-like while still being comfortable and cute. I bought it in light pink, magenta, and grey and can't wait to wear it with my leather jacket and motorcycle boots!

mixing metals

My older sister is getting married in less than two weeks (eek!) and my little sister and I are her maids-of-honor. Unlike most brides, my sister didn't care what type of dress we were wearing, as long as it was cornflower blue and modest. This was extremely lucky, because it means I got to pick out our dress, and not get stuck wearing some hideous dress straight out of 27 Dresses. She has been even more lax about shoes and accessories, and let each girl in her bridal party pick her own. I fell in love with Christian Louboutin's, but not being able to afford the $1,750 price tag, I made my own (post on these to come soon- promise it will be worth the wait!)

Shoes were easily taken care of, but the accessories are giving me some trouble. I bought a two strand crystal belt off of eBay ($10) but I am not sure about jewelry. Between my belt and shoes, I am wearing over 2,000 crystals, and I do not want to be Pippa Middleton and take away from my sister's special day (I would, however, LOVE to be Pippa on any other day). My mother suggested letting me borrow her diamond and gold pendant, which I immediately vetoed because I can't mix silver and gold, it just wouldn't look right.

But then I started thinking about it. Is it ok to mix metals? Every designer has at least one item in their line that has gold and silver mixed, and they are gorgeous. But is it acceptable to wear gold jewelry with silver shoes? Or a silver necklace with gold earrings? I guess it depends on your personal style, I definitely wouldn't do it. But that doesn't mean I won't be picking up some new mixed metal pieces....as soon as I get paid.

Friday Favorites

I decided to use this blog as an excuse to buy at least one new thing every week- so that I can write a Friday Favorite!
My favorite thing this week is my peacock necklace from dELiA*S . Unfortunately, it isn't available online (yet?) but since I work there, I was luckily able to snag the last one!

Lately I have been drawn to animal jewelry. I fell hard for an octopus ring from a little boutique in Collingswood, but every time I went to buy it, the store was closed. After the 4th time, I was about to give up, but we went one last time and the store was open. But the ring was not as cute as I remembered: it was huge and kind of cheap looking. That is something hard to avoid when shopping for animal jewelry. A lot of it looks trashy and even gaudy, but there are some places that carry cute items:
Forever21 has a peacock brooch , an owl ring (for only $2.80!), a rose tusk pendant , and tons more.
Buckle has a rhinestone turtle ring, an elephant ring, and a lion ring.
Francesca's Collection has a lovely peacock bangle , a sunbathing elephant, and wide eyed owl earrings.
Slightly more expensive, but still absolutely adorable is Nordstrom- crab studs, rainbow fish ring, and a peacock necklace to rival my precious purchase.

Every website I visited had multiple peacock items, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings in a wide variety of metals and colors, and tons of owl options- both of which are big for back to school and the fall. You can buy a bunch of different pieces or invest in a single high quality item, but you're definitely going to want to get on board with this fun trend.

Straps not so perfect?

A problem I have always had in the summer is trying to decide whether or not to tie back my bra straps when I wear a racerback tank top. I know it is extremely trashy to have my straps just hanging out all the time, but can I get away with it? I always wear another tank top underneath, so its not just my bra showing, but also the straps of my non-racerback tank too.

I did buy the Dollar Tree version of the Strap-Perfect ($1 for 4! and they come with two clear, one white, and one black) and I realized that I tend to use them more often in the winter and spring. During the summer, I either care less, or don't want to wear as many layers? Plus, a lot of my summer clothes are either chiffon or burnouts, so they are see-through, meaning anyone could see my strap-perfect. Is that any less trashy??

SweetiePie on HubPages.com writes on "The Great Bra Strap Debate" and gives a bunch of options for avoiding this classless look.
What do you do in the summer to hide your bra straps?

dolmans for days

I might be very late, but I just started creating sets on Polyvore and I am OBSESSED!
It's not great, but it is a start. I highly recommend checking Polyvore out! It is fun, there are fantastic clothing and accessory options to see, and it's easy to create outfits and magazine-worthy pages.
What do you think of my very first set?

dresses for every season

Summer is the perfect time for dresses! They are light, easy to throw on, and don't require much to look super cute. (But to be honest, I can find reasons for why every season is perfect for dresses) Today was rainy and cool in the morning, so I threw on a summer-weight cardigan over my babydoll dress from H&M, and then once the sun started shining, I just took it off and added a belt. So simple and yet so very cute!

There are tons of inexpensive dresses out there, especially now that the summer is winding down (WHERE DID IT GO!??!)
Pacsun
Victoria's Secret on sale for only $19.99!
Forever 21 has pages and pages of options, most for under $20, and even some under $10!

The best part about dresses are that even the most summery dress can be layered and turned into a fantastic winter ensemble.

Tut-Tut, it looks like rain

This morning was gorgeous, hot, and sunny when I first went out, but about an hour ago, the clouds started rolling in, and now I'm pulling a Winnie-the-Pooh and dressing for the rain. (If you don't know what I am talking about, your childhood was seriously lacking! click here to make up for lost time:

I don't know about you, but every time it is gloomy and gray, I get the irresistible urge to throw on my brightest colors and wildest prints to try and brighten up the day. The runway has been filled with neons, but to make it a little more practical for the every day fashionista, try wearing one really bright item with some more toned down ones. dELiA*S has tons of super cute options- from chiffon circle tops, graphic t's, cold shoulder t's, neon burnout vnecks, and dolmans in tons of colors and prints! Check out www.delias.com to browse through the whole website, and add some pops of color to your rainy day wardrobe!
